The 22 Best Reels – Fly-Fishing Reels

hey I’m Jeff with avid max. And todayI’ve got the Eddington cross water real with. It is great real it’s. One of the entry-level reels from Eddington. Though it’s one of their entry-level reels. It still comes with a lot of nice features. That you’re gonna find on. Some higher-end reels so it’s made out of a really durable composite material which is going to be great as its going to kind of resist. Some of those Nicks. And scratches and really still be able to hold up for you pretty well. You can tell here as well they’ve also tried to make. This a little bit of a larger Arbor reel so that’s going to help. You be able to draw the line in a little bit faster. And it’s also going to help a little bit with keeping some of the memory out of the line. This reel is going to come in a couple of different sizes so. If you’re going for a little bit smaller fish. And got a little bit smaller rod size there. It comes in four five six weight design. If you’re going for a little bit bigger. Than like, it also has a 7 8 9 size to. It as well these reels also come with interchangeable spools so. If you’ve got a couple of different kinds of fly line maybe sometimes use a floating and sometimes a sinking you can order.

Some extra spools as well. And just pop those off real easy. And put them back on then. You can also see as. You take that off this has a nice sealed disc drag system. And on the back here we’ll just put the spool right back on there on the back here it’s got a pretty easy to manipulate knob there that’s going to adjust the drag for you. You crank this down. It really does have quite a bit of drag with. And then there’s a lot of play in between. Where the drag is all the way on. All the way off and that’s going to help. You move from maybe hooking into a pretty big fish then maybe the next. One isn’t quite as big you’re going to be able to adjust. This pretty well specific for. Each different fish. That you’re gonna be catching there. It also comes with a kind of great little cloth bag here. That way at the end of the day after. You take this off your rod.

You can throw it in their then it’s not going to get dinged. Or scratch as it in your truck car. Whatever you have on the way home there it’s also pretty easy to convert. These from right-hand retrieve to a left-hand retrieve whichever one’s going to be easiest for you’ll be able to do. That real well the other great thing about. These reels is they also come pre-loaded so. You want to take some of the guesswork out of which line. You should be ordering you can just order. One of these kits here that’s going to come with the reel as well as the right kind of line. And leader as well already attached. And tied on to it there. You need to do is string this through your rod tie a fly on. And you’re good to go so. If you’re just kind of looking forward. That reel that’s going to get. You into fly fishing or maybe just kind of entry-level real that’s going to be great for kind of all-around use. This one’s going to do the awesome.

hey I’m Jeff with avid max. And today we’ve got the cross water fly-fishing outfit with. Us here from Eddington. It is a great set up. That has really a lot of different options with. It so we’ll go over. Some of those options in a minute but before. Ijust wanted to show. You what’s going to be similar about. All of them so with. All of the outfits here you’re gonna get the cross water fly rod. And then you’re also going to get the cross water reel. And then the reel is going to be matched to the rod so it’s going to be the appropriate size for it. And it’s also going to come with the right line for it as well so. These rails are going to come with your backing and then the fly line as well as a leader that’s matched through. That as well I said there were a couple of different options. And there really are quite a. Few so you’ve got two different sizes here the two-piece. Or the four-piece and that’s just kind of preference on which. You like better you don’t kind of. You got a little bit smaller car might be nicer to get the four-piece there. And then they also come in a couple of different sizes so. You can get seven and a half feet eight. And a half feet or nine feet.

And then there are a variety of different weights. You can choose as well so. They go from a four weight. All the way up to a nine weight. And on the little bit bigger rods here. This is a nine weight here but for all the rods from a seven weight up to a nine weight they’re also going to have the fighting but on the in there. It just makes it a little bit. More comfortable as you’re trying to reel in. Some of those bigger woods the reels. That come on these rods are entry level reel but. It comes with a lot of great features, so they’re. All going to be set up for a left-hand retrieve but. They can also all be swapped out to be used as a right-hand retrieve as well. And then all have a disc drag system as well. You can see here it’s a pretty big easy to manipulate drag knob on the back.

You crank it really does have quite a bit of drag so. This is going to be real easy to use on the fly so. You hook into maybe it’s just a little fish. You catch first and then the next. One is really a monster it’s going to be easy to kind of crank. That down on the fly. And be able to use that the cross water rods are. All medium action of fly rock. They feel really good in your hand, so they’ve got kind of the traditional cork handle there. You put them together. They feel really bounce. And then just a nice rod. They also all come with a really nice here rod tube. One of the things I like about. These kind of rod tubes is. They have an integrated spot here for the real as well so at the end of the day.

You just have to break the rod down. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve got the four piece. Or the two piece here. You can just break them down. And then you don’t. Even have to take the reel off of the rod. You just throw all right there in the rod tube. And you’re not gonna have to worry about the fly rod. Something landed on. It get broken in half. Or kind of damaging and scuffing up reel at. All here the other nice thing about. This reel is it has as. You can tell here it has a really large arbor. One of the things that the larger Arbor is going to do it’s actually going to do a couple of things for you it’s going to help with the retrieval speed but it’s also going to keep the line memory out of. This line as well all the lines. That come on these reels. This outfit is going to be the same they’re. All going to be a weight forward floating fly line. That is going to be great for a variety of different freshwater fishing applications the reel seat here is also saltwater compatible.

These reels don’t come with the salt water line on them so you’d have to switch. That out if that’s a type of fishin. You wanted to do if you’re just looking for kind of. One entry level system to get. You out on the water the first time but. That still comes with. Some really nice high quality components. This is going to be a great outfit for you being able to choose from a variety of different sizes. And weights even a two piece. Or 4 pieces and then having everything. That is matched so you got to do. You get out there in the water just pull. Some lines throw through tie a fly on. And be ready to go it’s going to be a great setup for you hey. hey I’m Jeff from avid Max. And today we’ve got the cross water rods with. Us here it’s a great entry-level rod from Eddington so it’s gonna have a lot of the features. That you’re gonna find on. Some higher-end rods but still come in at a great price. It also comes with a large variety of ways. You can purchase what I mean by. It comes anywhere from a four weight to a nine weight there’s also three different sizes. That vary a little bit depending on which weight. You get so you can get seven. And a half feet eight. And a half feet or nine feet. And then they come in. Either two piece or 4 pieces so. This is the size 2 piece here. That you’re gonna get with an 8. And a half foot rot so obviously adjusts. It a little bit one of the others. And then this is the 4 piece rod. Ibelieve this is from. One of the 9-foot rod lengths so. This is the longest that’s going to be. You were to get one of the four piece rods it’s gonna come with kind of lot of the standard features got a nice cork handle here it’s got an anodized aluminum real seat which is great. You can use it kind of at. Any different kind of water. And they’re also going to come with a nice cloth bag just to kind of keep them from getting scratched up getting real dirty as they’re in the car. Something like these are. All kind of medium to maybe medium fast action rod obviously you’re gonna want to make sure.

You get the same sized rod. You do the line. And the rest of it going up. And match that to the type of fishing. That you’re going to do so. This is just a four weight rod here which is obviously going to be used for a lot smaller fish maybe. Some of those high mountain streams. Whereas you get up into those seven eight-nine weight. You got the fighting but on. It you’re going to be able to go for a lot bigger fish. That way as well the nice thing about. These rods too is they also come as a complete outfit. You want to take some of the guesswork out of what size line. And then the leader. That needs to go on the end of. You can just order one of the complete kits as well. You hey guys. This is Patrick sessoms with D south outfitters fly shop. And guide service in Boone North Carolina today. Iwant to do a little review on a reel. We recently received from our good hardy rep bright. And earnest down in South Carolina nonetheless. This is the Hardy ultralight 3000 fw DD as. You can tell this is a really attractive reel. One thing that really drew my attention to. This is a super light. And the reason I like the kind of like nature of. This reel is a lot of the fishing. We do on the tail waters around. Us we’re not a lot of times especially in the summer we’re not fishing these huge heavy rods a rarely streamer fish truthfully I’m. You usually drive dropper fishing or mage fishing or lightning fishing and so. Isaw the 3000 FWD I was really excited because of. One is super light and as well.

It doesn’t have a super beefy drag so Hardy’s done a really good job kind of scaling down. This drag to be a custom fit reel for smaller streams lighter fishing tactics. We use very often here in the western part of North Carolina. And ultimately what I really like about. This is they’ve done away with. What you don’t need. And packaged exactly. What you need into a small really handsome package here. This reel retails this 3000 series of the ultralight FWD D retails for right at 219 so it’s a super reasonably priced real doesn’t break the bank. And to give you an idea of the weight of the same so. This real weighs three point let’s see here 34 ounces. You hook it up to a rod. You can really tell. That the kind of put. It in perspective the orbits hydros in the same size weighs five point six ounces so that’s.

You know two point two ounces greater in the hydros granted the hydros does cost 198 but in my opinion. You know I’d rather spend an extra 20 bucks. And get a much lighter reel but that’s just. You know being a person. That spends a lot of time on the water long guide days. Even with my clients. Ido find the delight of the real the less fatigue. That client has at the end of the day. They have better fish. And performance for the duration of the day, so I’m really a fan of. This reel because of. And tested it on the Watauga at the past couple days fishing was great by the way but nonetheless we’re really impressed. That the drag range on. This is really custom tuned to. We fish official my wife Meredith he’s a really good angler.

You know she had a. Few fish some really hard runs yesterday on. This reel it was just enough drag to stop a heavily running fish but not so much drag. You feel like you’re going to break. These your line you know. It really does a good job protecting like tippet. Another feature I really like about. This reel is it’s got. This color-coded kind of drag selection knob. You just your drag of course with a small knob here but. One feature that’s really nice is you’ve got three colors you’ve got a green orange. And a red drag setting with three dots on. Each of these you can really custom tune. Where your drag is set just at the blink of an eye. This is a feature I haven’t seen on. Many reels I know there’s a fee. Ithink the sages will number. Some of their drag settings. And things like that but it’s just a really nice kind of unique streamlined design here. That Hardy’s put on. This reel I found really beneficial especially in terms of a reel. Iuse with clients as a guide.

Ican look up one second know exactly. That guest reel is set in terms of drag so. If they do have a fish on there’s no guessing game going on. Ican look and instantly tell alright they’re drag setting is fine for where. What the waters doing what the fish is doing that’s really helpful for anglers. Another item I’d like to mention is the spool release it’s a really a simple design here it’s just a push release to take. This fool off just take your fingers. And let’s see I can get. This done without popping this off to. You are there again. It pops out comes out. And we’re good also meant to add. This is a dis drag so it’s not the strongest drag in the world but it’s definitely finely tuned for trout fishing and specific yeah so. This is a hearty or July FWD D in the 3000 series I’ve got. This loaded up currently with REO gold for weight floating line. And a good bit of backing on there. And it’s had no problem at. All taking all that line. And backing but yeah.

You ever get a chance to check. One of these out I’d highly recommend. They come approved and in fact. Iprobably plan on switching quite a. So says in your real. Iwant to show you really pretty so. Iquickly talked about the new Hardy ultralight MTX reel which. Ijust I’ve just got so. This is going to be the new freshwater lineup really lightweight reels particularly excellent to go on the new ultralight Zephyrus range they’re made from Barstow Callus in iam. And the big difference between. Many of the other lightweight reels. That Hardy have produced so far is. They have started using carbon fiber in the construction of the reel, so we’ve got carbon fiber back brace. And carbon fiber drag knobs. And that’s helped to reduce the weight on these things so. They really are ultralight other features of the real beautiful detailing as per usual simple line release as per usual excellent dis drag system inside which can be easily changed from left to right hand whined the drag regulator as on a lot of the new saltwater reels is a very easy three hundred. And forty degree turns from zero to full-on. And it’s got a really powerful little dis track in. It which is great so. This is the three four fives. Ihave which is going to go on my three weight in my four weight ultralight Zephyrus. And it’s its beautifully detailed with. This little orange aluminum anodizing carbon fiber. And it’s just unbelievably light, so I’m really looking forward to putting this through its paces. And actually trying to catch a. Few fish on it here on the test. This evening so they make.

This reel in three sizes. We have the 3000 to 5000. And the 7000 that’s going to take line weights through from three to nine weight. You could get a nine weight on the bigger. One with a couple of hundred yards of backing aesthetically. Ithink it’s one of the prettiest reels. That I’ve seen in a long time. You are going to go away from the traditional route of using something like the old lightweight series. Something like and you’re going to go to super modern. This is definitely one of the prettiest reels I’ve seen in a. Ilove the red detailing on the aluminum as well so. Now we’ve been through. Some of its main features let’s get. It on the water one of the things. Ireally really love about the new kit that’s coming out from Hardy’s at the moment is not only is. It exceptionally functions better be pretty. This real is just stunning there’s a fish just rising in here. Ireally like to put a fly in.

We can see it performs. This is just tucked in underneath. This Bank here it’s just under the side of. This bush there’s a little midge hatch going on in here that’s the noise. It makes it’s like a combination of the modern-day drag system. And a little bit of the old tune of the old reels used to play as well hoping this three weight will just put. It down gently enough so. That it’s not alarmed there. We go lovely little wild fish fantastic quick speed retrieve is the large Arbor lovely so guys I’ve had a chance to put. This rail through its paces it’s a beautiful real. Ihave to say that about. Most rails I get a little bit.

Idon’t know there’s. Something about one it’s unique it’s very different the detailing is very different. Ilove the noise it makes it’s such a fantastic kind of combination of new. And old the drag is very powerful I’ve put a couple of other fish with. This evening so really. You should probably go check. This put it’s a phenomenal reel go. And check it out on your fly shop. Hi hello crossed them the product manager for Hardy here to introduce the ultralight DD series of reels the also like DD series is manufactured from burst dock 6061 aluminum that’s been anodized the reels available in two color wears black inline sizes 3 through 7. And titanium inline sizes 3 through 10. All the reels within the range feature. This ultra larger burr narrow spool design. That gives you a very high line pick up speed. And also very good line layer the reels also feature they’re very easy to use simple secure locking not mechanism on the front to release the spool. You simply unscrew it left to right Hawaiian conversion very simple very fast. You simply unscrew this locking not reverse the bearing so again very simple the drag mechanism is an enclosed freshwater system. That utilizes multiple carbon composite fiber disc pads. That gives you a very good heat dissipation gives. You a very lost art of inertia. And gives you a very reliable long-lasting drag mechanism the drag is controlled by. This positive indented drug control on the back so. You can tell exactly. You are with your setting and the reels themselves feature a stunning industrial design. That looks perfect on. Any of our high performance fly rods the ultralight DD series really is an exceptional piece of equipment you.

And unboxing of the waterworks Lamson speedster size 3 real in black. And orange so you order the real comes in. This nice box made in the USA open. It up real neoprene case have instructions. How to change drag left to right a little decal. And then tag made us a quality inspected by ok so open up the rip. This nice case this model in black. And orange they also come in just silver. And also you can get. When in black with the silver drag knob again. This is a size 3 real so. This is their 6 7 8 weight 4 inch diameter school little over an inch wide according to the company’s website. It carries about 150 yards of 20-pound backing I have 7 weight real bone fish on. This real and nice thing about. This real is it’s really light only four point seven ounces so. Some things I like here first of. How light the reel is nice handle easy to grab really large Arbor spool. And a lot of porting on there so your background is going to dry pretty quick. It also helps reduce the weight just looking at. It the drag handles a little funny. You know it’s not as easy to turn as a round handle but low profile you’re not going to grab. Anything on there and then.

One thing I really like is. Ilike the design of. You know on the school here it’s just. It doesn’t have any spokes. Anything it just has. You know bar that goes across the machining and the weight over here acts as the counterweight so. You don’t have any kind of counterweight. You know just bolt it on their so yeah so that’s a real show. What it’s like to change the schools on these. You do is you come back here. You can pop it rights out. It is a sealed drag so. You take that off you look in here catch the light just right that’s the clicker on there so it’s just a little piece of plastic I’m not. You know thrilled about.

It seems like it could break easy but I’ve heard. That company leader replaced for free. And I’ve heard that data. You know people haven’t had problems with. It break to switch. It from right to left-hand retrieve. You just pop that out undoes. That right here hand tightens pop. That off in here there’s a one-way clutch bearing to pop. That out you flip and feed. It back in there it’s got a couple little grooves. It falls right back down into. You feel it seated. You can just pop this not back on. And tighten it snaps the spool back in — they’re pretty easy. And then you’re set up for left-hand retrieve. Igot the drag really light on. Icrank the drag down left. And retrieve and then pull the drag the other way let. It back over flip that over seat. It down in their pop the cap back on school right back down there. And you’re ready to go so easy to switch from right to left hand the drag is. Ithink it’s plenty strong for you know lightweight salt water use crank. All the way I think is about two.

And a half total terms to get from zero drag full drag yeah that’s plenty of weight. If you’re going after just mid. You know kind of mid lightweight salt water sounds pretty much the same on the way in. And going out showed. You the clicker it uses to make the sound so. You know a lot of things to like about. This real lightweight low profile nice handle not a terribly expensive reel. One retails for about three hundred thirty sealed drag so. You don’t have to worry about salt water getting in there. Ilike the design of. This reel I kind of like. You know one bar here looks nice minimalistic look to. It low profile yeah so. Ireally like if there’s. One thing I would change maybe a drag. That doesn’t feel so plasticky but other. That it’s a really nice real hope.

Hi I’m hold crossed. And Hardy product manager here to introduce a new addition into the ultralight family the ultralight M air DD real ml d stands for mid upper disc drug the Midd is manufactured from bur stock 6061 aluminum has got the stunning industrial design complete with two-tone anodizing the ma d series is available in four models covering everything from a three-line right the way through to a 1011. Some key features of. This reel includes a really simple secure easy to use screw off spool release mechanism. We simply unscrew the front of the spool. It can remove the spool. And there’s no loose parts to be lost the left. Or right-hand line conversion very simple. You simply remove this locking nut. And flip a1 we’re burying over the rail also features a multiple carbon brake system it’s very compact very light. Yet very powerful and it’s also controlled by.

This really innovative feature on the back we’ve got. This regulator system. That operates within 340 degrees so again. That means you can go from minimum to maximum setting in less. One full turn we also have a number of colored indents on the back of the reel which again just like your reference were the drag setting is for when you’re actually fighting a fish. One of the other major features of. This reel is the fact. It is a mid arbor a lot of the modern fly lines. These days we use take up a lot of space on the reel so. You like as an angler to have a reel. That holds a lot of bucking. That has a lot of extra backing capacity the Midd is probably the reel of choice. It allows you to put very large bulky tip. They have just enough drag resistance to. It will hold the line but you’re not going to get. Any back lashes anything it’s a machined aluminum real frame so the benefits are clicked. All reels is you save money by having a simple drag system. It just provides just enough resistance. When the fish is running fast. It has an exposed rim so. You take the fight into your own hands. It is the new reel from Sage to replace the very popular 4200 series I’m not a lot has changed from the last previous model same large arbor fast retrieve strong seal drag system. That we’ve become accustomed to in sage reels be ideal for targeting large salmon steel head in the Pacific Northwest. One thing I would say is an improvement. Or a change over the previous models is a much stronger louder clicker. Ihad multiple clickers fail on the 4200. They were all warrantied no problem from Sage but frustrating when. Ghetto guys we’re just gonna do a quick product review on the Tibor real Signature Series 910 graphite gray. One has got a permit engraving on the back plate. Iguess so Te bow reels. These reels are really cool. They come in a nice box. You open it up it’s got the reel. And a nice neoprene case. Although reels come in. This green neoprene case in the box as well you’ll find a bit of information yeah thank. This is the little piece of information in here. You can write your name. Everything to register your reel with Tibor reel. And also you can send in your little plate there’s a little plate attached to the reel to get. It engraved with your name. You also get a little sticker which. You can chuck when your boat kind of cool. You want support Tibor. This is just a piece of information. That tells how to change your retrieve from left to right. And also some maintenance. And cleaning information that’s. You get in the box basically okay here. We open up the neoprene case it’s got a nice little velcro think so. It can basically leave the reel on the rod. When you’re storing it. And just shop the neoprene case on the reel. And Feller it off around the rod. Now guys this is a graphite gray signature real we’ve seen the standard.

You know the gold color. One here’s the graphite gray looks really good as. You can see it has the permit engraving on. These don’t come standard with the permit engraving but our customer wanted. Us to get that on there for him as. You can see not big drag knob right out of the way of the handle nice large medium to large album can hold quite a bit of backing this. One here takes about 200 yards of 30 pound micron backing or 350 yards of 30 pound rate. This is for an 8 9 configurations on the 9 10 spools basically really easy to swap spools. You have a couple of spools. You can swap easily between like a heavier line. Or a sink or float basically. Everything in there is sealed water can’t get in. And it’s gonna last a long time putting the spool back on is as easy as putting it on top of the spindle. And just tightening the quick-release.

All right then and yeah walsim real looks good in. This color the reels actually quite nicely balanced the little handle there is quite large. It sits nicely in the hand. Ispilled up quite a. Few of these and yeah. It feels quite nice in the hand the spool is nicely balanced we’ve run line off. It real quick and yeah. It feels good yeah right here I’m just showing you quickly.
